How the Default Unit Cost was Determined
Cost information on pavement arrow markings (which include the use of a typical bicycle symbol) were collected during an interview with the Cambridge, Massachusetts bicycle coordinator. The city has used both tape and thermoplastic markings. However, the more expensive tape markings ($150 each) are more durable than the less expensive thermoplastic ($60 each) when installed properly. The city has had problems with tape installation in the past and so has shifted to thermoplastic exclusively.
Guidelines for the number arrows and symbols needed is as follows: Bicycle Arrows and symbols "shall be placed immediately after an intersection and at other locations as needed."
