How the Default Unit Cost was Determined
Studies and reports where signage costs had been specifically identified were reviewed in order to develop estimates for the cost of providing signage along a bicycle facility. The data sources did not always identify whether or not costs include signposts or cost of installation or only the cost of the uninstalled sign.
The Asheville Greenways 2003 Master Plan provided cost information for different sign types (informational, direction, warning, etc). The New York City Bicycle Coalition provided information from Pittsburgh's experience with sign costs including installation and posts. Although there was a range of sign costs from these sources ($55 to $1000 per sign), most examples for installed signs were between $100 and $250, with $200 being an amount identified by three different sources.
