Bicycles are vehicles and need to be safely accommodated on our streets and roadways. FHWA has supported routine accommodation of bicyclists (and pedestrians) since 2000. This means that our streets should be designed to accommodate all modes, including motor vehicles, transit, bicycles, and walking. Facilities that are safe, accessible and aesthetically pleasing attract bicyclists. Evidence is increasing that bicyclist safety improves as more bicyclists are part of the traffic stream.1
