Over half of all bicycle-motor vehicle crashes occur at or near intersections or other junctions. Improvements at these locations have the potential to significantly increase safety. Specialized intersection markings that may help bicyclists and motorists safely navigate through intersections and use of innovative techniques, such as bike boxes, are gaining more prominence in some communities. Other measures are designed to reduce conflict areas at intersections. It is also important to try to slow motor vehicle speeds through intersections to reduce both the number and severity of intersection collisions, and some of the treatments described below pertain to this objective. Other measures to slow speeds may be found in the Traffic Calming section.
