What is a public right-of-way?
Answer: A public right-of-way is the strip of land on which infrastructure such as highways, railroads or power lines are built. The right-of-way is owned by a public jurisdiction and includes the area where sidewalks are built and traffic signs are posted. Obtaining space within a right-of-way is sometimes necessary when constructing sidewalks and bike lanes. It is often possible to re-allocate space within the existing right-of-ways. One example of re-allocating space is converting four or five lane roads to a three lane road with a road diet.
