1. Know and follow the laws and rules of the road. Ignorance is never an excuse!

2. Keep your bicycle well-maintained—you can't be safe if your vehicle isn't safe and regularly inspected.

3. Make safe choices—learn to anticipate and think about hazards, so you'll know what to do when confronted by them.

4. Stay safe—wear a properly fitting helmet and make yourself visible at all times with bright clothing, bright head and taillights, and predictable movements.

5. On-bike training—run a simulated road course that imitates real-life traffic situations.
