Crash Type   Bicyclist rode out midblock  --   4.2%

In this crash type, the bicyclist rides off the sidewalk into the road without stopping and is hit by a motorist. Crashes occur with equal regularity on either the first or second half of the roadway.

More than ten percent of bicycle/motor vehicle crashes involve a cyclist riding out of a driveway or off the sidewalk into the path of a motorist. This is a very common crash type for young children who fail to stop and scan for vehicles before crossing the road or pulling out into traffic and the crashes typically happen on 2-lane local streets in the afternoon hours. Education efforts need to focus on teaching children to stop at the end of the driveway or sidewalk. In addition, however, motorists need to be aware of the potential for children to behave in this way and, especially on local streets where they can see children on bicycles, be ready to lower their speeds to give them time to react and stop.

Countermeasures
-- Bicyclist education
-- Training
-- Use traffic calming to slow vehicles in local streets
-- Create a buffer or barrier
