Crash Type   Motorist failed to detect bicyclist  --   1.3%

In this crash type the motorist fails to see the bicyclist and drives into the back of them.

Although many people fear this kind of crash the most, less than one-in-fifty bicycle/motor vehicle crashes occurs because the motorist fails to detect the bicyclist and crashes into the back of them. Many of these crashes happen after dark when the bicyclist is not using lights, or when one or both of the travelers has been drinking. Because of the speed of many of the motor vehicles involved in these crashes, however, this crash type is one of those most likely to result in a fatality.

Countermeasures
-- Bicyclist education
-- Visibility equipment
-- Improved lighting
