Crash Type   Motorist misjudges passing distance  --   1.2%

In this crash type, the motorist detects the bicyclist but misjudges the amount of space necessary to safely pass the bicyclist.

Motorists can run into a bicyclist because they misjudge the amount of space needed to safely pass a rider. They may be concerned about oncoming traffic, straying into another lane, or not realize how close they are to the cyclist. Vehicles with large wing mirrors, or drivers of oversized or unfamiliar vehicles may not realize how wide their vehicle is. Motorists may also exercise poor judgement in trying to squeeze past a cyclist when there isn't room and they would have been better staying behind the cyclist until there was space to pass safely.
